Self-esteem is the belief that you are a valuable and worthwhile person. It’s important because it gives you the confidence to do things like go after your dreams and goals, or to take risks in life.
It’s built on a foundation of healthy relationships with yourself, others and the world around you. Though, no matter how good of a relationship you have with others, the one with yourself counts the most. I know I’ve struggled with mine quite a few times in the past and am still working on it.
The first step to improving your self-esteem is to recognize what is affecting it. The second step is to get rid of the things that are making you feel bad about yourself.
If you’re struggling too, it’s okay. It’s not a sign of weakness if you need help with self-esteem. Everyone has days where they don’t feel confident or good about themselves, and it’s totally normal! Here are some things that can help:
Give yourself compliments and focus on things you are proud of
Self-esteem doesn’t come from looking at other people’s lives and saying ”wow, she has a nicer house than me” or ”he has more money”. It comes from being proud of yourself for all the things you do well in your life, not just for the things that other people do better than you. You will feel better if you stop comparing yourself with others and start trying to be the best version of yourself.
Each morning stand in front of a mirror and give compliments to yourself. For example: ”I have beautiful eyes. My smile lights up the entire room.”
Recognize Triggers that Affect Your Self-Esteem
The most important step in building self-esteem is to recognize the things that affect it. The best way to do this is to take a look at what makes you feel good about yourself and what makes you feel bad about yourself.
Once you have an idea of what makes you feel good and bad, try to figure out what the trigger is for each feeling. For example, if your worst feeling is ”I’m not good enough,” then try to figure out why that’s happening—maybe there’s something specific happening in your life right now that has made you feel inadequate or like a failure. Once you have an idea of what might be making you feel inadequate, let go of those feelings or people, and replace them with feelings of self-worth.
Make time for yourself every day (even if it’s just for 15 minutes).
It’s important for your self-esteem. You need time away from people who don’t support you or take care of you as much as they should so that you can recharge your batteries and get ready for another day of taking care of yourself.
Yoga and mindfulness
Yoga is an excellent way to build a stronger body, increase your flexibility and improve your concentration. It also helps you feel more relaxed in your daily life, which can help you feel more confident with yourself. Don’t stress if your schedule or budget doesn’t allow you to join a yoga class, there are countless videos on YouTube, so you can do it in the comfort of your own home!
Get enough sleep
Sleep is one of the best ways to boost your mood and improve your self-esteem because it helps to restore your energy levels and reduces stress.
It’s also a good idea to get more sleep if you’re feeling low on confidence or have had a bad day at work. Many people find that sleeping for seven hours or more helps them feel better about themselves, which can help boost their confidence and make it easier to take on new challenges.
Eating well is another way that you can improve your self-esteem by boosting your energy levels and keeping your body healthy. Eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, lean sources of protein and whole grains will help keep you full for longer, which means that you’ll be less likely to snack during the day.
Physical exercise is another great way to increase your confidence in yourself and boost your self-esteem by making you feel strong and healthy. Try going on a run or taking up swimming as they both have been shown to increase self-esteem levels among adults (as well as reducing stress).
If you’re not exercising regularly, start slowly so that you don’t injure yourself or burn out quickly – but make sure that you’re doing something active at least three times per week!
Don’t be afraid to say NO
This can be a hard one because you have to learn how to say no. You need to figure out what you want, and then make it happen. You can’t let other people control your life, otherwise they will always be able to take what you want from you.
If there’s one main thing you take from this post, I’d say: ”Don’t talk down to yourself, talk to yourself in a way you would to your dearest friends – with love and respect!”
