It’s hard to think of a fruit more perfectly suited for summer than watermelon. The juicy, refreshing taste and gorgeous color make it the perfect complement to a warm summer day—or a hot summer night. It tastes great plain but also lends itself well to other flavors like mint or feta cheese. Plus, it’s chock-full of H2O—a whole cup of watermelon contains 92% water!
In terms of health benefits, watermelon is an excellent source of lycopene, vitamin C and A, potassium and fiber. Lycopene is a carotenoid that is thought to have anti-cancer properties and has been shown in studies to help lower LDL cholesterol levels in some people. Vitamin C helps maintain a healthy immune system and promotes overall bone health, while vitamin A promotes healthy skin and vision. Potassium is important for heart health and has a role in nerve function and muscle contraction. Finally, fiber is essential for digestive health as it helps promote regularity and can reduce cholesterol levels.
On top of all that, watermelons are incredibly versatile! You can eat them as they are, cut them into smaller pieces or slices and decorate with them (think: centerpieces or cake decorations), or experiment with new recipes to incorporate watermelon into your daily meals.
