We all love the idea of working out and getting fit, but the reality is that it can cost a lot to join a gym, and if you have things like childcare to think about, it can make the whole thing feel impossible. The good news is that if you’re determined enough, there are plenty of ways you can get fit without spending much money at all. Here’s how to do it:
Eat Healthy
The first step is eating better. Eating better doesn’t mean cutting out all the foods you love, it simply means eating more of the healthy stuff and less of the unhealthy stuff. It’s probably one of the most difficult aspects of fitness, but one of the most important ones at the same time. When you eat better, you’ll experience less sickness, more energy, and more motivation to exercise.
Look for Free Classes Online
There are lots of sites online where you can find free workout classes. Youtube is a great place to start looking, and you’ll find videos of all kinds – everything from yoga to home HIIT sessions. It’s worth checking out apps too – there are lots of apps where you can sign up for free, and then pay for premium content if you wish to do so. Find one that suits your budget and interests, and start moving! You might even be able to use an app with friends as part of a group challenge. Our favorite YouTube workout guru is Chloe Ting:
Chloe Ting Challenge
Chloe Ting is one of the most popular fitness YouTubers in the world, and she has launched her very own workout programs.
They are perfect for people who want to get fit at home, and they include both easy and advanced workouts so you can choose what’s right for you.
The best thing about Chloe Ting’s programs is the community. You can connect with other people who are working out with Chloe around the world. This is such a great way to stay motivated and get support when needed.
Chloe Ting’s programs are free but you can also make a donation if you want to help support her. The donations go directly to Chloe Ting and help pay for things like production costs and equipment so that she can keep making videos for us! We’ve been using Chloe Ting’s program for a few years now (we like to do the two-week shred every summer) and it’s been great.
Get Outside More Often
The outdoors is free and good for you. If you like going on foot, walking is a great way to get exercise. If walking doesn’t appeal to you, well then cycling is your next best bet. When going somewhere, if it’s not too far away (say under a mile or two), opt to walk or cycle instead of driving or taking public transport.
Take the stairs
You don’t need expensive equipment to get fit – use what you’ve got! Climbing stairs is a great way to get fitter and stronger. You could walk or run up and down stairs for 5 minutes at home or during your lunch break at work.
You can also do “step-ups” by standing in front of a step and stepping up with 1 foot, then down again; step up with the other foot, then down again; repeat as many times as you can.
Get a jumping rope

The jump rope is a nearly perfect exercise, cheap, portable, and fun (which is why it’s been a playground favorite for generations). It will strengthen your legs and get you in shape faster than just about any exercise.
The only way to get in shape with a jump rope is to jump rope. But here are some suggestions that might make it easier to get started:
- Start with a good rope. There’s no point in trying to use an old frayed one; you’ll just get frustrated. And don’t worry good rope shouldn’t cost more than $20!
- If possible, practice on a wood floor or concrete surface, not on carpeting, which can catch the rope. If you really have to practice on carpeting, wear running shoes with flat soles for some extra support.
