Wallpaper can be a bit of an intimidating choice for those who aren’t used to it, but it doesn’t have to be! Here are some tips for choosing and installing wallpaper that will help you get the look you want.
Peel & stick vs traditional
Peel and stick wallpaper is a great option for renters, people who like to redecorate often, or anyone who is uncomfortable with the idea of tearing down and reapplying wallpaper. The adhesive is already on the back of the wallpaper, making it incredibly easy to install yourself. It’s also more affordable than traditional wallpaper because you don’t need any special tools to hang it up.
Traditional wallpaper requires an adhesive, which you either soak with water or paste onto the wall before applying the wallpaper. It’s known to be a lot more durable and is not made with the intention of being removed which makes it a bit harder to get rid of.
Materials
It is often made from paper with a thin layer of plaster or other backing material, but can also be made from vinyl, silk and other materials.
Paper wallpaper – made of 100% paper
This is the most common type of wallpaper and has been around since the 1600s. It was not until the late 1800s that wallpaper became fashionable in the home and by the early 1900s it was an essential part of any interior design scheme.
Vinyl wallpaper – most durable wallpaper
Vinyl wallpapers are a good choice if you want something that will last a long time because they are more durable than plain paper wallpapers. They are also easy to clean and don’t require much maintenance at all. However, they can be quite expensive compared to other types of wallpaper.
Vinyls also come in several thicknesses and textures, including smooth, matte and embossed finishes available in both solid-color options as well as patterned designs like stripes and floral patterns. Vinyls are particularly useful in kitchens and bathrooms where they can stand up to moisture better than other types of wall coverings such as fabrics or papers that may get damaged by water spills on them or even mildew growth if they are left wet too long before being cleaned off completely.
Non-woven wallpaper – more durable than plain paper wallpaper since it’s a mixture of natural fibers and vinyl
This type of wallpaper is made from artificial fibers (usually polyester) combined with paper pulp or wood pulp to give it strength and durability. It has many advantages over regular paper-based wallpapers.
Natural Grasscloth
Made from natural grasses and dried reeds which are woven together on a paper backing. It is most known for giving an earthy look, feel and outdoorsy smell (not in a bad way)
Incorporating wallpaper into your design
Wallpaper has come a long way since its heyday in the ’50s and ’60s. Most people associate it with old kitchens or bathrooms, but it’s actually a great way to add some personality to any room. There are so many beautiful options out there today that it’s hard not to fall in love with one!
If you’re going for a clean, modern design avoid clashing multiple patterns in every room. If you like to play with colorful pillows, rugs or blankets go for a subtle, more toned-down wallpaper.
Not every wall needs to be decorated. Choose an accent wall to display your wallpaper on and leave the rest blank (or at least neutral colored).
Most people don’t think of using wallpaper in their bathroom/powder room, which is a shame. It looks great in any room, just make sure to buy waterproof wallpaper (vinyl wallpaper is recommended) to avoid it getting ruined from moisture.
